  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

George Freedman (1936-2016), American-born interior designer studied architecture at Syracuse University and joined Knoll International's Planning Unit in 1968. Under the guidance of Florence Knoll and Peter Andes, Freedman worked on plans for the US Pavillion at the 1970 Osaka World's Fair.

He came to Sydney in 1969 when Knoll (New York) was commissioned to design the corporate executive suites of the Bank of New South Wales headquarters in Martin Place, Sydney. Remaining in Sydney after completion of the project, he was employed by Neville Marsh Interiors, which was rebranded Marsh Freedman Associates in 1983. With Neville Marsh, Freedman designed the interiors of some of Sydney's best restaurants including Kinsela's, Bilson's, Senso Unico and Chez Oz and created interiors for Hoyts Cinemas, Apple Computers, Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (1988) and the State Bank of NSW in Martin Place (1985).

The partnership dissolved in 1991, and Freedman continued to practise as George Freedman Associates (with Robert Chester and Sam Marshall). From 2002 to 2010 working as Freedman Rembel (with Ralph Rembel), he designed the interiors for the AMP Building and Quay Restaurant at Circular Quay and oversaw the refurbishment of the Queen Victoria Building (2009). In 2010, Freedman joined architects Peddle Thorp and Walker as Head of Interior Design.

Throughout his career, Freedman collaborated with architects including Glenn Murcutt and Peter Stronach on high profile government and corporate work as well as undertaking private commissions for prominent members of Sydney's business and entertainment communities. He was a Fellow of the Design Institute of Australia and the Academy of Design Australia.
