  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The origins of Orlando Wines date back to 1847 when a German immigrant, Johann Gramp, planted Rhine Riesling vines at Jacob’s Creek in the Barossa Valley. His son, Gustav, built a winery at nearby Rowland Flat in 1877, calling it Orlando, an Italian version of the settlement’s name. In 1912 G. Gramp & Sons was formed, and Orlando winery expanded rapidly. By 1938 Orlando had a fine reputation for its wines and brandy. The company grew, and in 1956 it produced Barossa Pearl, a very popular low-cost, quality sparkling white. In 1971 Orlando was bought by Reckitt & Colman Australia. It is now owned by an overseas group controlled by French company Pernod Ricard.

Mick Beard was manager of two wine bars owned by Orlando Wines at Glebe and The Rocks. Wine bars became popular in Sydney in the 1960s and 1970s as wine-drinking became widespread owing to new groups of refugees from Europe arriving in Australia. Orlando and other wine companies such as Penfolds took advantage of this and established their own wine bars in the city and suburbs.
