  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    John Morrice (1811-1875) was a pastoralist, agricultural proprietor and politician.
    Born in Jamaica to a British tea plantation family, he arrived in Sydney in 1834 on the vessel James which was chartered by Dr John Dunmore Lang for free immigrants.
    Morrice married Jane Osborne on 9 November 1838 in Sutton Forest. He owned several properties in the Southern Highlands including Eling Forest and Glenrock Marulan. He also owned property in Victoria and Queensland.
    In 1860 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Camden, serving until his retirement in 1872. He died in 1875 at Marulan.


    Walter Morrice was a younger brother of John Morrice. He was born in Georges Valley, Jamaica.

  • Scope and Content
    01. Handwritten exercise book inscribed: John Morrice, 6th March 1829. The first half of the book contains transcribed questions and answers from 'Questions from the Universal Preceptor'. The book was turned upside-down at a later date and contains miscellaneous instructions, including how to make dyes and varnishes, horticultural information and a list of rations and clothing allowances for assigned convicts.
