    Bruce Smith was born in Artarmon NSW in 1922 and after leaving school worked as a survey assistant. He joined the RAAF in 1942 and flew in Stirling bombers in operations over Germany. After the war he studied engineering at Sydney University, graduating in 1950. In subsequent years his work as an engineer took him to New Guinea and the Northern Territory. In 1964 he was appointed Chief Engineer and Joint Managing Director of Queensland Aerial Survey Company. From 1969 to 1971 he was OIC of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition (ANARE) to Mawson in Antarctica.
