  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Elsie Myra Dowe (1883-1972) was born in Tamworth, New South Wales. Her father was Richard Andrew Dowe (1847-1915) a solicitor who was born in Windsor and married Mary Ann Bloomfield (1846-1930) in 1878. They had two sons and five daughters. Richard's father Dr. Joshua Isaac Dowe (1813-1875) was born in County Cork, Ireland and came to Australia in 1840. He married Sarah Loder (1828-1913) in 1842 and they lived in Windsor where he was coroner for 18 years. In 1860 after resigning, Dowe moved to Tamworth to the historical property Woolomol Station, and resumed his medical practice, he was the one of the earliest practitioners in New England. They had 10 children born between 1843 and 1861, two of them not surviving past infancy.

    This collection comprises one photograph album compiled by Elsie Myra Dowe. It includes studio portraits and candid photographs of multiple generations of the Dowe family, most are labelled with full names, as well as views of Tamworth and the New England area including streets, properties and nature views.

    Also included are six loose photographs of house 'Old Wilga', Carthage St, Tamworth by G. Howlett Tamworth and portraits of Thomas Bloomfield (uncle) by Johnson Corner Pitt and Market Street Sydney, Reggie Dowe, Clarence Percy Dowe, Richard Andrew Dowe by G.E. Lees Brisbane Street Tamworth, Hilda Mary Dowe and [illegible] by Crown studios and printout of the Dowe family tree

    Some portraits are taken in photographic studios including: Talma Sydney, A. Solomons Peel street Tamworth, G.E. Lees Brisbane street Tamworth, and G. Rickard Tamworth.
