  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Henry Vere Barclay (1845-1917) was born in Bury, Lancashire. He left England for Australia in 1871. He surveyed and explored Central Australia and the Northern Territory between 1877 and 1912. Barclay died in Hawthorn, Victoria.

  • Scope and Content
    57 images from Captain Henry Vere Barclay's photograph collection, taken during various survey expeditions. The images comprise:
    1. 6 cabinet cards, 3 inscribed in ink on reverse: 'En route, HVS', 'Self in N.T. 1889' and 'My Survey Camp N.T., HVB'
    2. 43 photographic prints of expedition members, Aboriginal people and landscapes, some captioned in pencil on reverse, including 'Borroloola' and 'Jay Creek, McDonnell Ranges'. One photograph. which contains culturally sensitive Indigenous information, is RESTRICTED
    3. 1 photographic print captioned in ink on reverse 'Donald Mackay's amazing tattoo markings'
    4. 7 prints of landscape scenes

    Some images are identical to negatives from the National Library of Australia collection "Barclay-Macpherson expedition to the McArthur River and Gulf of Carpentaria regions, Northern Territory, 1911-12", which are attributed to the expedition's official naturalist and photographer Gerald F. Hill.
