  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Sir James John Joynton Smith (1858-1943), hotelier, racecourse and newspaper owner, was born on 4 October 1858 at Bishopsgate, London. About 1890 Smith came to Sydney where he managed various hotels in the Sydney area. A keen sportsman, he invested in racecourses and other sporting events. Smith was nominated to the Legislative Council in 1912 and retired in 1934. From 1916-18 he was an independent alderman of Sydney Municipal Council, and elected lord mayor from 1917-1918. In 1919 he founded the Smith's Weekly newspaper.
