- Scope and Content1 sketchbook of 28 pencil and pencil ink wash drawings on 28 sheets with marbled paper covers and original binding. Signed and dated on inside front cover, May 4th 1841.
Several of the drawings are titled and depict scenes in Sydney and England.
An early drawing titled “Pinchgut Island Port Jackson” shows the partially levelled island with three huts perched on the highest point. Work of transforming Pinchgut into the fort that would eventually become Fort Denison commenced in mid-1841 and the huts were built to house the convicts working on the site.
“Flagstaff Sydney” shows Fort Phillip situated on the Observatory Hill. Within the fort’s walls can be seen two flag staffs as well as the capped stump of Sydney’s first windmill and a cottage which may have been the signaller’s residence. Alongside the wall is the powder magazine designed by Francis Greenway.
Another drawing depicts Mrs Macquarie’s Chair but is titled “Lady Macquarie’s Chair Sydney Domain”. There is a further inscription, "Be it thus recorded that this was drawn by P MacPherson an Australian Collegian June 10 1841". - Copying ConditionsOut of copyright: Creator died before 1955
