William Hetzer arrived in Sydney from Germany in 1850 and opened a photographic studio the same year at 51 Hunter Street, advertising calotype (salt prints), portraits and views. Hetzer specialised in paper photography and captured the market for stereographic views and carte-de-visite portraits. In 1858 he produced an album of 36 stereoviews of Sydney which proved popular with the public and by 1859 he had increased the series to 60 stereoviews. Moving to new premises at 314 George Street in 1858 and then 287 George Street in 1859, he mentored local amateur photographers as well as continuing with his commercial studio work.
