  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Frank Prout Mahony (1862-1916) was an Australian-born artist who initially began working in an architect's office before studying under Giulio Anivitti at the New South Wales Academy of Art. He exhibited paintings in the 1879 Sydney International Exhibition and worked on the Illustrated Sydney News and the publication regularly issued a poster-style supplement based on the documentary work of artists and later, photographers. Mahony was best known for his work on the 'Picturesque Atlas of Australasia' (1886), for illustrating several Henry Lawson publications, including 'When the Billy Boils' (1896) and for his illustrations in Ethel Pedley's 'Dot and the Kangaroo' (1899). Mahony was a founding council-member in 1895 of the breakaway Society of Artists in Sydney, an instructor for the Art Society of New South Wales, and a member of the Dawn and Dusk Club. In late 1901 he left with his wife Mary for London and although he joined the Langham Sketch Club and was in contact with other expatriate painters, he received only limited commissions. Mahony died of cancer in Kensington Infirmary on 28 June 1916.

The print was reproduced as a tinted lithograph in the Illustrated Sydney News on Thursday 15 September 1887 titled, 'The New South Wales Mounted and Foot Police'.
