  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Stephen and Yuana Hesketh purchased their house at 34 Bullecourt Avenue, Mosman, in 1985 from its architect, Ken Woolley. Woolley designed and built the house in 1962 as his family home and it won the Royal Australian Institute of Architects Wilkinson Award in that year. It was heritage listed by Mosman Council in 1999 and the NSW Heritage Office in 2001 as an outstanding example of the postwar Sydney School of architecture.
In 2000, the Heskeths wrote to Mosman Council complaining about removal of native trees from the neighbouring garden of 34A Bullecourt Avenue and subsequently objected to proposed further development on that site, arguing that it would have a significant adverse effect on a heritage site and its curtilage. The issue centred on whether curtilage stops at a property's boundaries or extends to other land that affects its integrity. The long dispute was finally resolved in the Land and Environment Court in October 2002, with the (somewhat modified) renovations allowed to proceed.
