  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition (ANARE) was formed in 1947 to coordinate the establishment of permanent scientific research stations in Antarctica. Stations were established on Heard Island in December 1947 and Macquarie Island in March 1948. Australia's first permanent base on the Antarctic continent was Mawson, established in 1954. Davis was established in 1957, and in 1959 Australia took over the running of Wilkes from the USA. Casey station was opened in 1988. Thousands of men and women have travelled south, living and working in the region for periods of time ranging from a few weeks to eighteen months.

Dr Ingrid McGaughey is a medical doctor from Tasmania who has completed several Antarctic expeditions. In 2010 she became the first female president of the ANARE Club, which was formed in 1951 for those who have travelled to Antarctic or subantarctic regions with Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions. The oral history project aimed to preserve Antarctic history and increase awareness of ANARE expeditioners and their contribution.

  • Scope and Content
Oral history interviews with ANARE personnel who took part in Antarctic and Subantarctic expeditions from the 1950s to the 1990s. The interviewees, diverse in background, age and occupation, include scientists, medical personnel, maintenance workers and other essential service personnel. The interviews cover a wide range of topics, but predominantly focus on: personal reflections and practical aspects of living in a small isolated community in a remote location; recruitment and training for the expeditions; food; work roles and infrastructure; communication and maintenance of relationships back home; Midwinter and other social events.
