  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Richard Read (ca. 1796-1862), artist, arrived in Sydney from London as a free settler in 1819. By 1821 he was advertising in the Sydney Gazette as a ‘portrait and historical painter and miniature painter’ operating from premises in Pitt Street. Read often adopted the distinction 'junior', to distinguish himself from another artist, probably his father, Richard Read senior (ca. 1765-1829). From the 1820s onwards Richard Read junior was concentrating on portraiture, presumably due to demand from a burgeoning middle class. Read’s clients were prominent individuals, traders, military officers and setters including Dr William Bland and Governor Richard Bourke.
