    James Norton (1824-1906), solicitor and politician, was born in Sydney, the eldest son of James Norton (1795-1862). James (the younger) was admitted a solicitor in 1848 and joined his father to establish Norton & Son, which became incorporated in 1897 as Norton Smith & Co.
