James Oswald Fairfax began his career at John Fairfax Ltd as trainee journalist under John Pringle in October 1955. On the 9 May 1957, he was appointed a Director of John Fairfax Ltd. In March 1977 he was appointed to the Chairmanship of John Fairfax Ltd.

Comprises files from the office of James Fairfax as Chairman of John Fairfax Limited, including some personal files collected prior to his Chairmanship. The files contain board beeting information, memos between board members, correspondence between James and Sir Warwick and other general correspondence.
