  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    The 'Southern Cross' was built at Wivenhoe, Essex, England, in 1891 by Forrest & Sons for the Melanesian Mission of the Anglican Church and the Church of the Province of Melanesia. It was the fourth in a succession of ships with the same name serving the Mission and was in service from 1892 to 1902 when it was sold.

    Four architectural drawings relating to the construction of the 'Southern Cross', a three-masted schooner with auxiliary steam engine.
