  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Samuel Leigh (1785-1852) was an English Wesleyan missionary and minister who arrived in Sydney on 10 August 1815 on the Hebe. He established the first Methodist circuit, with fourteen preaching places.
    In February 1822 Leigh went with his wife to New Zealand where he established the first Wesleyan mission at Whangaroa. In 1832, after the death of his wife, Leigh, returned to England where he died in 1852.

  • Scope and Content
    A three-and-a-half page letter handwritten on laid paper watermarked “Carron 1825”, signed by the Reverend Samuel Leigh and addressed to the Reverend Joseph Taylor, Hatton Garden, London, 2 April 1830.
    The letter contains descriptions of persons, events, and finances connected with the NSW District Wesleyan Committee.
