  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Edmond Bigot de La Touanne (active 1824-1828) was a French topographical artist and naval officer. He was a lieutenant on the Thétis expedition to the South Seas in 1824-1826 under the command of the French explorer Hyacinthe de Bougainville. Bougainville, son of notable admiral and explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville, had joined Baudin's earlier expedition to Australia as a young sailor in 1800.

In 1824, Bougainville set out to circumnavigate the globe, and in 1825 the warships Thétis and Espérance arrived at Port Jackson and stayed in Sydney for three months. During this time, Bougainville and his crew travelled as widely as possible in the colony, to Botany Bay, Camden, the Warragamba River and the Blue Mountains. La Touanne was referred to by Bougainville in his journal as a 'faithful companion on my travels.' Due to the speed with which the expedition had been put together, no official artist was included on board, so La Touanne's drawings are the only pictorial record of the voyage.
