  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    George Henry Walton Smith (1869-1954) was a general practitioner in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney and a trustee of the Paddington Methodist Church. During the Boer War, Smith was acting Principal Medical Officer at the Garrison Hospital, Sydney.

    Florence May Walton Smith (1880-1935) was the youngest daughter of George and Catherine Walton Smith, of Paddington, New South Wales. She was an enthusiastic art student, and exhibited for some years at the Royal Art Society, Society of Artists, and Woman Painters' Exhibitions. She was a sister of Dr. G. H. Walton Smith, Mr. P. Walton Smith, Dr. P. E. Walton Smith, and Mesdames Adin Parsons and F. Dobell.

    A bound volume of autographs, dedications, handwritten notes, poems, photographs and artistic works, ca. 1899-1926. Includes works in pencil, pen and ink and watercolour by W. J. Hodge, Laura Booth, Florence Walton Smith and Mabel Forsythe. Also contains an autographed dedication from Millicent Bryant, the first Australian woman to be awarded a pilot's licence. Some pages are loose.

    Inscription on inside cover reads: F. M. Walton Smith [Florence May Walton Smith] "Pendower" Oxford St, Paddington, 1906, from P. G. WS. Address has been crossed out and replaced by: Mylora, 30 Bondi Rd, Waverley.

    Attributed to George Henry Walton Smith by vendor, however ownership inscription and dedications point towards Florence May Walton Smith being the original owner / creator.
