He lectured at the University from 1972 until his retirement in 1991, also serving as director of the Architectural History Research Unit and course co-ordinator for the degree of Master of the Built Environment. His research interests include changes in the built environment of Sydney's inner-west suburbs Leichhardt, Balmain and Annandale and a life-long study of the Canadian-born architect John Horbury Hunt, giving rise to the formation of the Horbury Hunt Club by Reynolds in 1989. A founding editor of the Leichhardt Historical Journal, he has contributed many articles for this and other publications, including the Australian Dictionary of Biography and Dictionary of Sydney.
