She was born in Sydney but left Australia with her family in 1947, moving to Hong Kong, Italy and New Zealand before making a home in New York. Hazzard's 1970 novel, The Bay of Noon, was shortlisted for the Lost Man Booker Prize in 2010. Ten years later The Transit of Venus brought her international acclaim and won the National Book Critics Circle Award. Her 2003 novel The Great Fire won the U.S. National Book Award for Fiction, the Miles Franklin Award and the William Dean Howells Medal.

Peter Morton has had an extensive career in broadcasting. He joined the ABC as a graduate trainee and spent a number of years as a producer and presenter of radio programs before being appointed Chief of Staff to the Managing Director.
