Performing Lines was founded by Wendy Blacklock in 1982, as the Australian Department of the Australian Elizabethan Trust. In eight years the department produced or toured more than 40 shows in Australia and internationally. In 1990, the department incorporated as Performing Lines Ltd., an autonomous, non-profit company funded by the Australia Council and private sponsors. For the next 21 years, with Blacklock as General Manager, Performing Lines worked with many of Australia's leading contemporary performing arts companies, and particularly with Aboriginal theatre.
