Robyn Read was educated at the University of Sydney where she graduated Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Town Planning. From 1971 to 1977 and 1987 to 1991 she was an alderman of North Sydney Council, including periods as Deputy Mayor and Acting Mayor. During this time, she was also Head of the Central Policy Unit in the New South Wales Department of Planning, Commissioner of Water Resources in New South Wales, and Director of the New South Wales Land Co-ordination Unit. Read was an independent member for North Shore in the NSW Legislative Assembly from 1988 to 1991.

The collection, which dates predominantly from the 1980s, includes transcripts of speeches given while Read was an executive at the New South Wales Planning and Environment Commission; consultant reports written for Qantas, Garden Island Dockyard and Leichhardt Council; papers written for a Masters Degree in town planning, specifically as they relate to the development of North Sydney, where Read was an Alderman.
