  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

William Hodges (1744-1797) was an English painter. Between 1772 and 1775 he accompanied James Cook on his second voyage to the South Seas as the expedition's artist and is best known for the sketches and paintings he produced during and after the voyage, some of which appeared as engravings in the original published edition of Cook's journals. Hodges was elected A.R.A in 1786 and a full Academician the following year.

George Dance (1741-1825) was an English architect, surveyor and portraitist. With his brother Nathaniel he was a founder member of the Royal Academy in 1768. Between 1793 and 1810, he produced 53 profile portraits of his fellow Academicians.

William Daniell (1769-1837) worked mostly as a topographical draftsman and engraver in aquatint. Daniell entered the Royal Academy schools in 1799; he was elected an Associate in 1807 and a full academician in 1822. In 1802, Daniell began his many years translating George Dance's series of half-length portraits of 'eminent characters' into soft ground etching. In 1814 a number of these were selected for publication in two volumes, with a preface by Dance.
