In 2016, the Royal Australian Historical Society was commissioned by Government House Sydney to research and write a work about the roles and impact of the wives of governors since the early stages of the colony through to recent times, with the project to be known as "The Governors' Ladies". To assist with collecting information on later governors' consorts, for which there is a dearth of available material, the State Library of New South Wales undertook in June 2016 to conduct an oral history project, recording interviews with surviving wives or consorts of 20th and 21st century governors of New South Wales. Interviews with governors' children and senior staff such as secretaries or aides-de-camp were also to be included.

The collection comprises oral history interviews with ten people close to previous governors of New South Wales, comprising spouses, children, a grandchild and senior staff. The interviews document the subjects' life stories including their experiences at Government House and how they perceived and managed their public roles. Photographic portraits of most of the interviewees, taken at the time of the interview, are also included.
