    McLeod, Dr James (1862 – 1925), medical doctor, born Tain, Scotland. Graduated Medical School at Edinburgh, 1887. Age 29, James obtained passage as ship’s surgeon on the Gulf of Matraban, arriving in Sydney 18 April 1890. Became physician at West Wallsend and Monkwearmouth collieries in the Hunter Valley from 1890 to 1891.

    In 1891 he moved to Sydney, and set up general Practice in Hurstville. In that year he married, Christina McLeod. A daughter Margaret Mitchell McLeod was born 21 July 1892. Remarried Una Kilpatrick Rogerson of Glen Innes in 1895. On 27 May 1900 a daughter born and christened Sheila Annie Rogerson McLeod.

    While at Hurstville James’s hobbies was to subscribe poems and tales to the Bulletin magazine (under the pen-name of ‘Mac’). James was a member of the Hurstville Amateur Dramatic Society. He also enjoyed sketching people he met in little pen drawings and was himself drawn by a Bulletin artist in 1918.

    In 1925, following 30 years’ of practice at Hurstville, James died on his first trip back to Scotland to see his family; he was in his fifty fourth year. Dr James McLeod Memorial Wing at St Georges hospital is named for him.

    Small collection of mainly sketches, the majority loose, some sketches in a scrapbook, accompanied by letters, notes, and poems, both printed and manuscript, together with an autograph book and printed extracts from a diary.
