  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Charles Augustus Goodchap (1837-1896) arrived in Sydney from England in 1853. He found employment as a clerk in the Colonial Secretary’s Office before transferring to the Land and Works Department in 1856. Three years later he joined the railways branch of the Department of Public Works. He was appointed Commissioner for Railways in 1878 but his administration was dogged by political pressure and criticism and he resigned in 1888. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1889 and on his defeat in 1891 he was appointed to the Legislative Council.
