  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    John McEvoy and his second son Eugene McEvoy were members of the firm of John McEvoy and Sons, boot manufacturers and importers. The firm was a commercial force in Sydney from the 1860s until World War II. John McEvoy died in 1899 and Eugene died an alcoholic in 1903.They were both prominent in the Catholic community and social circles.

  • Scope and Content
    1. Illuminated Address, dated 1 March 1886, in bound volume, presented by members of the Wholesale Boot Trade in Sydney to John McEvoy inviting him to a picnic prior to his departure for Europe. Various colour inks and watercolour on paper, two sheets, each 26.8 x 18.8 cm, the first bearing a watercolour drawing of Chowder Bay, the second bearing the signatures of 20 members of the Wholesale Boot Trade in Sydney; mounted side by side in the original presentation folder of gilt black morocco with embossed gilt lettering and border. With plain red cardboard slip case.

    2. Illuminated Address, dated 13 April 1893, in bound volume, presented by members of the Wholesale Boot & Shoe Trade of Sydney to Eugene McEvoy prior to his ‘projected trip’. Various colour inks and watercolour on paper, two sheets, each 26.5 x 18.9 cm, the first bearing a watercolour drawing of a steam ship leaving Port Jackson, the second bearing the signatures of 27 members of the Wholesale Boot & Shoe Trade of Sydney; mounted side by side in the original presentation folder of gilt black morocco with embossed gilt lettering and border; in fine condition. Illuminated by John Sands, Sydney. With plain blue cardboard slip case.
