On 13 December 2012, the NSW State Government announced a commitment to build a $1.6 billion light rail line from Circular Quay along George St to Central Station, then across to Moore Park and down Anzac Parade to the south-eastern suburbs of Randwick and Kingsford. A pedestrian zone would be established along approximately 40% of George St, between Bathurst and Hunter Streets. Work on this project began in October 2015 resulting in the closure of busy thoroughfares such as George St and pedestrian access restricted in some areas.
