    David George Stead (6 March 1877 – 2 August 1957) was an Australian naturalist and scientist. He founded the Wildlife Preservation Society of Australia in 1909, served on international committees on fisheries science and oceanography, was an active member in numerous leagues and societies, was managing director of the Australian Whaling Co. and published numerous books, pamphlets and articles. Christina Stead based the character ‘Sam’ on her father in her book ‘The Man Who Loved Children’
