Sir James Martin (1820-1886) was born in County Cork, Ireland, and emigrated to Australia with his parents a year after he was born. He was a prominent lawyer and politician, having held the offices of Premier (three times) and Chief Justice of New South Wales. He married Isabella Long (1832-1909) in 1853, and by the mid-1870s they had eight sons and seven daughters. Two of their children died in 1880-1881, and in 1882, Isabella moved from the family home in Rushcutters Bay to Vaucluse.
