  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

In 1836 Felix Caleb Wilson, a wealthy merchant and ironmonger, purchased five acres at Potts Point where he proposed to build his residence, ‘Caleb Castle’ (later known as ‘Grantham’). Designed by an unknown architect in the same Gothic Revival style as the new Government House, it was considered pretentious and derided as ‘The Pepper Pot’ because of its turrets, or ‘Frying Pan Castle’, a reference to Wilson’s occupation. During the early 1840s it was purchased by another merchant, Frederick Parbury who renamed it ‘Granthamville’. In 1853 the house was acquired by Henry Dangar who made such extensive renovations to it that eventually it became known as ‘Dangar’s Castle.’ It was demolished in 1937.
