Norman Lang McKellar developed this collection because of his keen interest in merchant shipping, although an injury prevented him from becoming a merchant shipman. When the AUSN (Australasian United Steam Navigation Company) was winding down, McKellar was given permission to salvage anything he thought of historical value. Much of the collection had already been pulped before McKeller was able to review it, and as a result the collection is disjointed and incomplete.
