    Sayeda Gumeiz was born in 1971 in the Nuba Mountains area of Sudan. After the death of her father, the family moved to Khartoum, where life was difficult. She and her husband and family travelled to Cairo, Egypt, and applied for refugee status. They were resettled in Blacktown in Sydney before moving to Orange, in central western New South Wales, where she is a leader of the Nuba community.
