Thayaparan Rajendram (b. 1976) and his wife Kogitha Thayaparan (b. 1982) are both Tamils from Sri Lanka who grew up in the same village. Thayaparan migrated to Australia after the 2004 tsunami, subsequently obtaining a protection visa, while Kogita migrated with a spousal visa. In 2013 they became the legal guardians of a 9-year-old Sri Lankan asylum seeker whose father had died on Christmas Island.
