    Amjad Hussain was born in 1973 in Quetta, Pakistan, to Hazara parents. He became a journalist in 2000, working as a newspaper journalist and television news reporter. In 2007 he moved to Pakistan's English language news channel, Dawn News. After receiving continued death threats, he engaged a people smuggler, travelling to Indonesia and then on to Australia by boat. After 5 months at Curtin Detention Centre he was granted a bridging visa.
