Watkin Tench (1758-1833) was born in Chester, England and arrived in New South Wales in 1787. He wrote two accounts detailing the arrival of the First Fleet and the first four years of the colony : Narrative of the Expedition to Botany Bay (1789) and Complete Account of the Settlement at Port Jackson (1793) that were published and translated into several languages. His writing includes much information about the Aboriginal people of Sydney, observations about the land, struggles with agriculture, and exploration west and south-west of the settlement. Among his achievements in the colony was discovering the Nepean River.

He was held for six months in France as a prisoner on parole where he acted as the interpreter to Admiral Rodney Bligh after their ship the Alexander was surrendered (1794).
