The file contains memos and correspondence between the chairman and chief executive as well as the chief editorial executive and the editor in chief of the Sydney Morning Herald. Correspondence and memos regarding the Governor's visit to the building in 1977 to commemorate the centenary of John Fairfax's death and the unveiling of the Caxton Head which had been returned to the company by the Bank of NSW from the Hunter Street building.
Copy of letter to the then prime minister in 1979 regarding the Broadcasting and Television act.
Handwritten memo April 1980 from G. E. Foster on the nominee company Vident Pty Ltd.
Copy of speech given at the AANA Convention at Surfer's Paradise, October 1980.
Some correspondence in 1982 with Fine Arts Press regarding republication of Art in Australia.
Most of the memos in the file are between the chairman and the then chief executive, R. P. Falkingham, who retired at the end of December 1980. The memos refer to all aspects of the running of the company and its subsidiaries, as well as staff. Also reports of discussions with other newspaper executives and invitations to various well-known people and also politicians to dine in the company's dining room.
There are also memos on the retirements of two executives T. H. Farrell and G. E. Foster and recommendations for their replacements.
