  • Scope and Content
In 1976 the Kings of Arms, London, granted Arms to John Fairfax Ltd and seven badges to its publications. The winged torch which is the central symbol of the Arms and Crest is from Sir Warwick Oswald Fairfax's personal arms. The winged torch denotes a herald bearing news. The motto 'Fer Fax lucem' means 'O torch, bear light'. These latin words hint at the Fairfax name.
The seven badges represent The Sydney Morning Herald, The Sun, The Sun-Herald, The Australian Financial Review, The National Times, The Illawarra Mercury and Canberra Times
The arms are signed Conrad Swan, York Herald of Arms 12.02.76 York
This series contains copies of line drawings, photographs, negative and positive transparencies of crest and badge designs. There is also a full size mounted production of "The Armorial Ensigns of John Fairfax Limited" which depicts the Arms and Crest of the company surrounded by the seven badges representing its major newspapers.
