Adrian Deamer was appointed Legal Manager of the Editorial Department of John Fairfax & Sons Ltd in February 1984. His role was to supervise all legal activity involving libel, contempt, copyright and those other areas that touched on the Editorial Department. He was an executive, not a libel solicitor. Most pre-publication legal advise came from the company solicitors Stephen Jaques Stone James.
When a serious complaint was lodged with a paper, either with an editor or with a member of the staff, and it seemed legal action was possible, the complainant was referred to Mr Deamer. He would liaise with the company solicitors and supervise their relations with the company.
