On 17 August 1938 Rupert Henderson succeeded A.H. Stuart as General Manager of John Fairfax & Sons. On 24 June 1949 he was appointed Managing Director. During his time in that role he oversaw the evolution of John Fairfax & Sons Pty Limited into a public company - John Fairfax Limited, the acquisition of Associated Newspapers Limited, the consolidation of the company into a single site at Broadway, in addition to the taking company into television, radio and investment in newsprint manufacture.
After his retirement he remained a director of John Fairfax Ltd until 1978. Henderson also held the following positions; 1964-1978 Chairman of Macquarie Broadcasting Services and associated companies; 1970-1978; Chairman Newcastle Morning Herald & Miners Advocate and associated companies; 1960-1978 Chairman Australian Newsprint Mills; 1958-1974 Chairman of Amalgamated Television Services; 1954-1964 managing director of Associated Newspapers
Outside Fairfax he was a Director or Reuters from 1946 until 1952 and thereafter a trustee , and from 1961 he was Chairman of the Trustees.
