John Brehmer Fairfax was a journalist with the Sydney Morning Herald in Sydney, Canberra, London and New York in the years 1961- 1967 and with the Birmingham Evening Mail in 1967.
He became Assistant to the General Manager 1972 (?) and Manager of The Federal Capital Press of Australia Pty Limited on 13 March 1975 until 1987. He was became a Director of John Fairfax Limited in 1979 and Deputy Chairman from 1985-1987 and was also a Director of David Syme & Co. Limited 1981-1987, Chairman of Macquarie Broadcasting Holdings Limited 1981-1986 and Chairman of Fairfax Magazines Pty Limited from 1979- 1987.
He became a director of Rural Press Limited in 1988 and Chairman in 1990
