The National times had a reputation for high quality journalism in political, social and consumer areas as well as the arts and sports. It was managed and edited by the editor. It began in 1971 with Vic Carroll as managing Editor. Trevor Kennedy was the first editor. Max Suich was editor of the paper from 1972-1978, Evan Whitton 1978-1981, David Marr 1981, Brian Toohey 1982-1987
By 1986 Fairfax rebranded the paper as a broadsheet titled the National Times on Sunday, changed four months later to the Times on Sunday. Robert Haupt was the editor. In April 1987, Haupt resigned and was replaced by Valerie Lawson.
The Times on Sunday closed on 13 March 1988.

This series contains 67 files of the Editor of the National Times / Times on Sunday. The Editor's files cover the administration, content and quality of the newspaper. The files also deal with legal matters, mainly libel cases, and staff matters
