The position of Executive Editor was created in the early 1970s to ease the increasing workload on the Executive Manager and assistant general manager, T. H. Farrell. The Executive Editor linked the five Sydney editors with management. David Bowman was the first executive editor. When he was appointed as editor in chief of the Herald the position went to R. A. Johnson. In 1980 the board looked to a more direct editorial representation at the top. In 1980 the new Chief Editorial Executive, Max Suich, was given responsibility for "over all and day to day management and administration subject to the control and direction of the board". Suich was responsible for the entire editorial administration of the operating company's Sydney Newspapers. Suich was also Non executive director on the board of Reuters PLC, Director of AAP and AAP Communications, Fairfax representative on the Australian Press Council
