The role treasurer commenced in 1957. In 1975 the designation altered to *Treasurer and Principal Accounting Officer and again in 1980 to Principal Accounting Officer. The role was superseded on or about 18 January, 1981 when a Chief Financial Executive was appointed.
In January 1957 the company advertised through Price Waterhouse for a 'Chief Accountant'. The outstanding applicant was Robert Falkingham, a 41 -year-old West Australian (Busselton 150 miles South of Perth), who at the time was sub-chief accountant at the head office of the Bank of New South Wales in Sydney.
In 1970 at age 54 Robert Percy Falkingham was the companies 8th general manager, the first without a journalistic background since C.T. Harris. September 1976 he was appointed Chief executive. 29th of October 1980 A. H. McLachlan retires from the board of John Fairfax Ltd and R.P. Falkingham is appointed a director. Retired as director 31.10.1981

This series contains the files of the treasurer of John Fairfax Limited. Robert Falkingham was the treasurer from 1957 to 1970. The majority of the 195 files in this series were files of Falkingham. The files contain copious notes, correspondence and reports, mainly of a financial nature, regarding the operations of John Fairfax Ltd and its subsidiaries. Falkingham was also a director of a number of companies including Australian Newsprint Mills, Tasman Pulp and Paper, Amalgamated Television Services, David Syme & Co, Macquarie Broadcasting Holdings and Traveland International Pty Ltd. As a consequence there are minutes and other board papers relating to these companies in this series.
