  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Business Manager was established in the second half of 1949 when John Hughes was appointed Business Manager to succeed the previous office of General Manager's Secretary. John Hughes had previously been a partner in Kent, Brierley and Fisher (auditors) and secretary of the Australian Newsprint Pool. The position was broader in scope than the Secretary to the General Manager had been and embraces Financial and technical matters, but was not involved in Editorial concerns. When Hughes left the company in 1954 he was replaced by R.H. Vize.
It is unclear whether this office was continuous, but Mr G. Bain was appointed business manager in 1968. Records indicate that in 1970 the Business Manager was responsible for a scheme of providing incentives for staff to undertake further study. By 1979 the same position was responsible for property maintenance, new systems, communications, garage security, safety and emergency procedures and to have had a role in local newspaper acquisitions. The Business Manager was also involved in investigating researching and reporting on subjects assigned by the General Manager. In approximately 1979-1984 the Business Manager was also a director of Newcastle and Illawarra Newspapers.
