The series consists of correspondence between the Sales Manager in the Circulation Department and various senior officers including The Managing Director, Secretary, Treasurer, Editorial Manager, various circulation managers, . The Sales Manager was responsible for maintaining statistics concerning the Sales of Newspapers and forwarding these to the Audit Bureau of Circulation and of ensuring that the newspapers were available for distributors, distribution of promotional items, .
Subjects include pricing, distribution of promotional items, proposals for special one-off publications, complaints from readers, adequacy of supplies, distribution of posters, promotional means of competitor newspapers, newspapers returned unsold, newspaper production costs and sale prices; industrial matters affecting the capacity to have the newspapers distributed on time; sales methods including door-to-door canvassing and random checking of newsagents' placing of posters and newspapers, supply of back issues; circulation figures and comparison of those of competitors; delivery contracts; managing inserts; placing advertisements and other publicity for Fairfax newspapers; sales at shows, sporting and other fixtures; supplements , puzzles and other special measures and the result on circulation; interstate sales.
