  • Scope and Content
The series consists of figures compiled by the Audit Bureau of Circulation that were retained by the Circulation Manager. Many newspapers and magazines co-operated with the Bureau. For the period March 1933 - September 1941 the series contains typescript tables showing the name of the publication, the Proprietors and the circulation figures for each six-monthly period. It would appear that Fairfax and Consolidated Press did not initially subscribe to the service because the figures are entered by hand until March 1937 and various other figures that are missing or illegible are likewise entered in pen. Occasional comments are entered to explain unusual figures. These include important news events (such as the declaration of war) but also media events including the commencement of new publications.
The later items in this series are in published booklets each covering a six-monthly period. The publications for which figures are shown are classified and include Metropolitan/ National Daily Newspapers; Metropolitan Sunday Newspapers; Overseas Daily/ Sunday Newspapers; Regional Daily Newspapers (All States); Country Newspapers (All States); National Press; Rural, Business, Professional and Association Press. The tables show the name of the publication; cost; place of publication; frequency; number of audited issues; circulation figures for each six-monthly period and comments including the number of public holidays, industrial action and similar matters that might affect circulation.
"The ABC has been providing advertisers, marketers and media buyers with verified circulation data for paid publications delivering credibility to the media industry since 1932. Members interested in the data include advertisers, agencies, research companies, stockbrokers and leading financial institutions.
"The ABC audit process verifies the paid circulation of a publication over a defined audit period.
"As a not-for-profit industry organisation the ABC is governed by an Executive Committee and General Committee elected from the membership on an annual basis. Committee positions are honorary and represent the tripartite nature of membership with equal representation from Advertisers, Advertising Agencies and Publishers.
"The ABC works closely with industry to provide services relevant to members needs while providing the integrity of third party verification of data." (1)
