Herbert Edward Dadswell was appointed Secretary in 1916 when John Fairfax & Sons Limited was registered as a company. The Secretary was responsible for the activities that supported the Board of Directors, large contracts, negotiations and for a range of legal, property and corporate record-keeping responsibilities. He was also the company's Public Officer.

By 1957 the office was divided into The Secretary (Sydney) and the Secretary (Canberra).

The series contains a diverse set of files, created and used by the secretariat. The subjects include company incorporation matters, the Board, some subsidiaries, staff matters including retirements, retirement fund administration, land and property administration and donations to charities. It is not uncommon for files to contain newspaper clippings, or annual reports or editions of newspaper magazines.
