  • Scope and Content
The series consists of scales of display advertising rate cards, leaflets and circulars pasted into a volume. These cover rates in The Sun and in some cases The Sun-Herald. The cards indicate prices by the inch (later centimetre or 'em') and by column. There are special prices for preferred positions within the paper, and most of the brochures indicate the conditions of contracts for display advertising. Some show the circulation figures of the newspapers to indicate the advantage of advertising.
Loose in the volume are Daily and Sunday Mirror Advertising Rate Cards covering 19 February 1951 to 3 June 1962 (Sunday) and 1 November 1964 (Daily). Interspersed in the series are occasional comparative tables of the advertising rates charged by the various newspapers.
Display advertising is that generally placed by retailers and other businesses usually inserted into the news sections or supplements to assist with marketing. This contrasts with classified advertising that is inserted by a range of clients to publicise events, such as births, marriages deaths, employment legal notices; shipping or to buy or sell items such as motor vehicles, equipment. Classified advertisements are placed into special areas of the newspapers for this purpose.
